MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene — one of a small class of "mitochondrial-derived peptides" the body makes from its own mitochondrial DNA. It activates AMPK, the cell's master energy sensor, by perturbing the folate cycle so AICAR accumulates and switches AMPK on. The downstream effect is increased glucose uptake into skeletal muscle and a shift toward fat oxidation.
